DIAMOND CERTIFICATES AND THEIR IMPORTANCE

What Are Diamond Certificates?

Definition and Purpose

A certificate is a “schematic plan” of a diamond. It reveals the diamond’s exact measurements and weight, as well as the details of its cut and quality. It describes the precise characteristics of the diamond.

Certificates also serve as proof of the diamond’s identity and value.

MyAnterpDiamonds.com offers diamonds certified by HRD – Hoge Raad voor Diamant or Diamond High Council, GIA – the Gemological Institute of America, IGI – International Gemological Institute.

HRD  – The Diamond High Council is the officially recognized representative of the trade and industry. HRD headquarters are located in Antwerp, World Diamond Center.

The HRD diamond certificate, which guarantees the authenticity of a diamond and thus rules out the possibility of it being an imitation or a synthetic diamond. Also, the certificate contains a complete quality description of the diamond, with regard to shape, weight, clarity grade, fluorescence, colour grade, measurements, proportions and finish grade. These quality characteristics determine the value of the stone.

GIA – the Gemological Institute of America
Established in 1931, the nonprofit Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is considered by many to be world’s foremost authority in gemology. GIA’s mission is to ensure the public trust in gems and jewelry by upholding the highest standards of integrity, academics, science, and professionalism through education, research, laboratory services, and instrument development.

IGI Diamond Report
The International Gemmological Institute is the oldest institute of its kind in Antwerp. Set up in 1975 with labs in New York, Bangkok, Mumbai and Tokyo

The IGl Diamond Report is essentially a statement attesting to the authenticity of a diamond and providing a reliable and accurate statement of its identity and grade based on an internationally recognized system.

Each diamond is scientifically analyzed by several gemologists who use their experience in combination with state-of-the-art equipment to produce an accurate description of the characteristics of the diamond and the quality of its cut. With its detailed information presented in understandable language, the different qualities of a diamond can be truly appreciated.

The Difference Between Diamond Certificates

At DiamondsAntwerp we offer mainly diamonds with GIA, HRD and IGI Certificates which are considered the 3 major certification laboratories in the world. We also offer in-house certificates for smaller diamonds. However, many diamond vendors offer EGL and other local certificates. The tables below demonstrates the grading difference between the main certification labs.

Rapnet – the Rapaport Diamond Trading Network found significant differences between laboratories grading the same diamonds. RapNet sent diamonds, from 0.33 carat to 1.62 carats, and of different qualities to six certification labotories for grading. The diamonds were sent to GIA, IGI, HRD, EGL USA, EGL Israel and EGL Hong Kong. While the results on some of the sample diamonds indicated some consistency in grading, there were significant variations on others.

At DiamondsAntwerp we are aware that certificates and lab grades are conducted by independent groups and in many cases determined by market trends. Thus, our in house gemologists inspect all diamonds to confirm diamond quality before shipping and are at hand for immediate consultations regarding diamond characteristics.

Laser Inscribed Diamonds

Most diamonds offered by MyAntwerpDiamonds are laser inscribed with the certificate grading report number on the girdle. This laser inscription ensures that your loose or mounted diamond matches its report, guaranteeing it is the exact diamond you ordered from MyAntwerpDiamonds.

The inscription is visible under 10x magnification and does not affect the quality or value of the stone. It can be removed by polishing the diamond.

If you are unsure whether your diamond has laser inscription, please consult with a MyAntwerpDiamonds representative.
